...richard `the funk` furter

Band History (in chronological order)...

Blues Jokers, Constantin Pringo Band, Greeny's Blues Band, Orlando Beer Trio, Isis, Francois Lindeman Trio, · Freshly Layed Band, The Outsiders, Cosmetics, The Rocking Erics, Apres Ski, The Agency & The Secret Agency.

Early influencial gigs...

Count Basie (when I was about 10) ; I became aware of the groove and was struck by how the Count could set up an irresistible rhythm with three notes on the piano. The importance of space, phrasing and feel.
Eddie Cochran (on the radio) : 'Something Else'
Memphis Slim : Discovering the Blues
The Blues Breakers (with Mick Taylor) : Mo' Blues
The Mothers of Invention : No stylistic boundaries necessary the sheer fun and inventiveness of the music and the show.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience : The feeling of that gig lingers on to this day…
McCoy Tyner : The feel, the rhythm, the energy - incredible and so spiritual
Miles Davis (with amongst others Michael Henderson, William Cobham, Keith Jarrett, James Mtume, Gary Bartz) : Physical, raw, mantric, so very funky
Headhunters
Bootsy Collins : Found the funk and did not let go.

The Pinocchio Theory...

Don't fake the funk or your nose will grow.

Later influences...

The Freshly Layed Band (Badger Bars c.1976) : The frizzy haired drummer with that lovely walnut Slingerland kit, the guitar player with the Gibson SG Custom, above all the straightforward simplicity, rawness and feel
Pierre Billieux, a sparkling individual and friend.
Everything I could listen to and take in, however alien and remote from my usual tastes
